June 2018

June 19, 2018

Dear Families/Caregivers and Staff:

In a few short weeks, we will be completing the 2017-2018 school year. It is exciting to salute and celebrate our students making essential transitions - elementary to middle school, middle school to high school and, of course, our seniors to college, careers and becoming future leaders. The Class of 2018 epitomizes the essence of Montclair. Our seniors have demonstrated scholarship and maturity beyond their age, engaged in acts of organized and thoughtful activism and have proven to be positive role models for the underclassmen. I have great expectations that our underclassmen will follow in the Class of 2018's footsteps and continue to make the legacy of Montclair even greater. We are Montclair proud!

The Montclair Public School District is proud to say that some of the best students in the state of New Jersey are enrolled here. In addition, I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the dedication, caring, and expertise of our remarkable staff. Every day our exceptional staff members strive to provide the best educational services to the students entrusted in their care. Teachers, support staff, and our school board are all committed to making the Montclair Public Schools the best it can be. This commitment, coupled with the support of parents/guardians and the community-at-large, cultivates an environment of safety, encouragement and support. Students are equipped with the skills to ensure their dreams can be realized.

In the coming weeks, I will be sharing timelines for hiring the next principal of Montclair High School. The position has been posted internally, as well as in Education Week and the Star-Ledger. Our search efforts will be thoughtful and expansive, as we embark on the challenge and opportunity of finding the right leader for our flagship high school.

Throughout the summer, I encourage our students to read and write every day, use mathematics, and partake in outdoor physical activity. I expect everyone to return in September fully ready to become engaged in the teaching and learning process. Parents/guardians are encouraged to examine both the academic and enrichment programs offered by Montclair Public Schools and our community partners.

Over the past month, it has been my privilege to serve as Montclair Public Schools' Superintendent. I am grateful for the amazing team of Central Office leaders; talented, school-based leaders; classroom experts; dedicated support staff; an insightful school board; engaged parents/guardians; and committed, community partners whose supports and demands for daily dynamic learning experiences enrich the opportunities for each child in each class.

A wish for a healthy, safe, calm and relaxing summer vacation is extended to all. As a reminder, the central and school offices are open year-round, and you can reach out for information at any time. Thank you for calling in advance to ensure the staff you need are available, as our 12-month staff will take vacation throughout the summer.

Enjoy the summer months with your families, and I look forward to your return to the Montclair Public Schools family in September. First day back for students is Thursday, September 6, 2018.

Regards,

Dr. Kendra V. Johnson
Superintendent
